Tips & Best Practices
A few things to know before you get on the air.
Use the USA/Canada (Recommended) Preset
The settings below are available in the MeshCore app as the built-in USA/Canada preset. Always use this preset rather than entering values manually — it ensures you're on the exact same configuration as every other WNY repeater and companion device.
MeshCore Is Light on Network Traffic By Design
Unlike other LoRa mesh protocols, MeshCore is intentionally quiet on the airwaves. Companion devices don't rebroadcast traffic, and repeaters keep announcements infrequent. This keeps more airtime available for actual messages — don't be alarmed if you see minimal radio activity at first.
Set Your Position via the Map, Not GPS
If you want your node to appear on the network map, use the web config tool's map to pin a general vicinity rather than enabling a GPS module. GPS constantly drains battery — especially important for solar-powered repeaters. A general neighborhood location is enough for mapping and preserves some privacy.
Repeaters Are Essential — Not Optional
Because MeshCore companion devices don't rebroadcast, dedicated repeaters are the lifeblood of the network. If you have a device in a high location, consider flashing it as a repeater. A well-placed repeater on a rooftop or hilltop can bridge traffic for dozens of users across several miles.
